Seder Chazzanut (Amsterdam) – Describes the unique nusach of the Amsterdam Portuguese community, as used in the Esnoga. Up till 1950, various hand-written booklets existed, made by chazzanim and shamashim for their own use. This site aims to bring together the “what and when” from the old manuscripts, with the “how” from recordings in a multi-media way. Here are two notable downloads to get information in printed form:
Mikveh Israel Music. The music website for Congregation Mikveh Israel in Philadelphia, the second oldest synagogue on the United States, founded in 1740.
Shaar Hashamayim (London):
Liturgical Music of Shaar Hashamayim. This site contains almost the entire cantorial repertoire of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews’ Congregation of London – “Kahal Kadosh Shaar Hashamayim” – which was established in 1656 and is the oldest Jewish community in the British Isles
Arbith Shel Shabath The complete Sabbath eve service from Bordeaux. The S&P ritual of Southern France (Rite Portugais), which had been practiced in Bordeaux, Bayonne and Nice and is unfortunately extinct, was rather distantly related to the Amsterdam-derived rites and approached the Italian Sephardic custom, particularly “rito spagnolo” of Rome (thanks to Catriel Ceballos for letting us know about this!)
