Eve of Kippur (9 Tishri)

Arbit Evening

  • Regular with its additions and NO SELIHOT. They will be recited in the morning.
  • Psalm 121 “Essa ‘Enai” is recited instead of Psalm 130, Mima’akim.

Selihot Morning Ereb Yom HaKippurim

  • Services Start at 6:30 in the morning. We used to start at 5:30. The Selihot should last about an hour.
  • The Selihot are found in the Rosh Hashanah book.
  • The Selihot are read without Tallet nor Tefillin.
  • (Ten minutes before, we read the “Bircot Hashahar”).
  • After page one we skip to p. 4
  • On p.15 we sing “Tehillat Amonai” to the tune of Yede Rashim.
  • Afterwards, the Hazzan stands up and recites the Kaddish.
  • On p. 18 skip “Shebet Yehudah” and continue with inserting extra text for the ‘Aseret Yeme Teshubah.
  • At the end of p. 42 skip to p.48 and say “Atanu”.
  • Afterwards skip till p.55 and say “Shomer Yisrael” till end of p. 59.
  • (Some say Hatarat Nedarim after Shahrit).

Shahrit Ereb Yom Hakippurim

  • Zemirot are started with “Tehillat” in the Yede Rashim melody.
  • “Amonai Hu Ha-Elokim” is chanted as in the Selihot.
  • “Amonai Melekh” is chanted as in the Selihot also.
  • We OMIT Mizmor Letodah.
  • Rest of Shahrit is regular until the Amidah.
  • The Amidah is recited first BeLahash with the additions for the Asseret Yeme Teshuba.
  • The Hazarah melodies are like on Rosh Hashanah.
  • After the Hazarah, Abinu Malkenu is recited but no Tahanunim.
  • After Kaddish Titkabbal we recite Psalm 32 (LeDavid Maskil) followed by Kaddish Yehe shelama Rabba for Abel.
  • “En Kelohenu” is sung to the Yede Rashim melody.
  • “Barukh Amonai” and ” ‘Alenu” is sung to the Rosh Hashanah melody.
  • If Kaddish for Abel needs to be recited, then precede it with the pesukim.
  • After Tekubbal announce: “Services this afternoon will be @ 1:30 PM”.

Minhah Ereb Yom Hakippurim

  • Starts at 1:30 pm without Tallet.
  • Follow as indicated in the book.
  • In Ashre we sing “Tehillat” to the tune of Yede Rashim.
  • The Kaddish before the ‘Amidah, is ended low from “Da- amiran”.
  • One Amidah without Hazarah. Kedushah on Yede Rashim tune.
  • Read slowly so that the congregants have a chance to answer.
  • After ‘Amidah we say “Abinu Malkenu” even if it is Ereb Shabbat.
  • Skip Psalm 85 and say Psalm 130 Mima’akim.
  • ” ‘Alenu” is sung to the Rosh Hashanah melody.
  • At the end announce, “services this evening will commence at 6 P.M.”
  • New York: The Tebah flames are lit after service.

Kippur (10 Tishri)

‘Arbit Shel Yom HaKippurim

  • The Hazzan starts always (even if it is Shabbat) from “Shema’ Koli Asher Yishma’ Bekolot” while seated. The choir and Kahal takes over till “Lehalot”. The Hazzan resumes with “‘Ane ‘Ani Shefal Kol HaShefalim” and stands up to the reader’s desk while the Choir and Kahal finishes the Piyut and repeats the last five words.
  • New York: The Hazzan recites some perpetual and other Hashcabot then bows to the Parnas to come to the Tebah while the choir sings the Mi Sheberakh.
  • The Hazzan announces the Mitsvot as follows: (He should have at hand the list of both Shahrit and Minhah)

  • The Sifre Torah are taken out from the Hekhal and are being lined up (New York: in rows of two or more) in front of the Hekhal.
  • The Hazzan waits until all Sifre Torah are lined up before he says “Gadelu”.
  • The Choir and Kahal start singing from Romemu as on every Shabbat (Philadelphia: Romemu melody is in the holiday tune) and the procession start going to the Tebah from En Kaddosh. Since the last two lines (beginning with Ki Shem Amonai Ekrah) are not recited (they precede the levantar on Shabbat and other occasions), the Hazzan stops at the word “Bashalom”, raising his voice to indicate the end (some congregants may be used to continuing).
  • The Sifre Torah surround the Reader’s desk.
  • The Hazzan, on the Tebah, stands at his place (behind the Sefarim).
  • Another Hazzan standing more or less in the center, puts his Tallet over his head in front of the lectern and intones “Beesheebah…” followed by the Kal Nidre three times; each time in a higher key.
  • The Hazzan then says the Berakhah Sheheheyanu.
  • The service continues as in the book with the various prayers for the Government, etc…
  • FINALLY, the other Hazzan sings the “Yimlokh” for the return of the Sifre Torah.
  • At the word “YIMLOKH” the procession leaves immediately the Tebah by descending from the left and going around the Tebah on the way to the Hekhal.
  • Philadelphia: Offerings are made at this time.
  • New York: We NO LONGER make offerings at this time.
  • The Hazzan then sings the Shubah, taken over by the choir and Kahal and returns to the Tebah.
  • At the Tebah, the Hazzan bows to the Seganim who come up, puts his Tallet over the head, while the Hekhal remains open and starts with “Vehu Rahum”. This is repeated by the choir and Kahal. He then continues until the Shema.
  • In the Shema, “Barukh Shem Kebod Malkhuto Le’olam Va’ed” is said Bekol Ram by the Hazzan and Kahal. (Also Vehara Af is said Bekol Ram).
  • On Shabbat, after the Amidah, the choir starts Veshameru. It is repeated by the Hazzan.
  • The Kaddish before the ‘Amidah, is ended low from “Da- amiran”.
  • On Shabbat, after the Amidah, we recite Vayekhulu Hashamaim. REMEMBER: Hamelekh Hakadosh instead of Ha-El HaKadosh).
  • On p.51 The Pesukim are recited in the Selihot tune and repeated by the Kahal.
  • The Selihot are said on p.177. (During the Vidduy, the Hazzan covers further his face with the Tallet).
  • After the Selihot, resume p.54 till p.63.
  • In New York, skip p. 64.
  • The Kaddish before ‘Alenu Leshabeyah is started by the Hazzan to the tune of Yede Rashim. The Choir and Kahal continue from “Be’alema”. The Hazzan will start also “Yehe sheme Rabba Mebarakh” and “Yehe Shelama Rabba Min Shemaya”.
  • At the end of ‘Alenu Leshabeyah, the Seganim descend from the Tebah, the Hazzan lowers his Tallet and, the Hekhal is closed at this time if there is a sermon or a short prayer.
  • The Hekhal is reopened for the duration of Yigdal.
  • The Hazzan starts the Yigdal with “Yigdal Elokim Hay Veyishtabah” to the tune of ” ‘Et Sha’are Ratson” and the choir and Kahal continue till “Vetorato”. The Hazzan then starts from “Metim” till ” ‘Ade ‘Ad” and the choir and Kahal follows with ” Shem Tehillato”.
  • The Hekhal is then closed.
  • After “Tekubbal” the Hazzan announces: “Shahrit tomorrow morning, will commence at 8 O’clock”.

Shahrit Shel Yom HaKippurim

  • Zemirot are started with “Tehillat” on Yede Rashim tune.
  • On Shabbat we add Ubyom HaShabbat on page 79.
  • “Amonai Hu Ha-Elokim” is chanted to Selihot tune.
  • “Amonai Melekh” is chanted on Yede Rashim tune also.
  • Psalm 19 “Hashamayim Mesapperim” is said after “Vehaya…”
  • We recite the 10 more Tehillim in the Zemirot.
  • Hekhal is opened before Barukh She-Amar.
  • On Shabbat we add the first verse of psalm 92.
  • We DO say “Mizmor LeTodah” on page 118 after psalm 92.
  • When the Hazzan starts Shahrit, the Seganim ascend the Tebah and the Hazzan puts his Tallet over the head.
  • Shahrit is started with “Amonai Neghdekha Kol Ta-avati” p. 128 by the Hazzan to the tune of Shema’ Koli. Afterwards, the Kahal takes over. The Hazzan repeats “Amonai Neghdekha Kol Ta-avati” at the end.
  • “Elokim Eli Atah” is said by the Hazzan and the Kahal says the response.
  • “Nishmat” is started by the Hazzan to the tune of “Elokim Atah Yada’ta” and the Kahal takes over with the regular melody from “Umibal’adekha”.
  • The “Ubkhen” before Yishtabah is sung by the Hazzan to its special tune. Similarly, the Berakhah has its special tune.
  • “Shin-anim” is to the tune of Yede Rashim. The Hazzan starts every stanza and repeats the last “Habu Lamonai”.
  • The 1st half of the Kaddish, is the melody of “Shofet”. The 2nd half will be to the tune of “Shema’ Koli”.
  • On Shabbat we add La-El Asher Shabbat on page 139.
  • In the Shema, “Barukh Shem Kebod Malkhuto Le’olam Va’ed” is said Bekol Ram by the Hazzan and Kahal. Vehara Af is also said Bekol Ram.
  • The ‘Amidah is first said Belahash.
  • In the Hazarah, the Kedushah is in the “Ahot Ketanah” melody.
  • The Cohanim do not go up to the Dukhan in New York. The Hazzan will say the Bircat Cohanim in Hashkibenu’s melody.
  • On Shabbat we DO NOT say “Abinu Malkenu” afyer the Hazarah.
  • We say Kaddish Le’ela after the Hazarah.
  • The Selihot are said on page 177, introduced by Lema’ankha.
  • After Kaddish Titkabbal, the Hekhal is closed, the Seganim descend from the Tebah, the Hazzan lowers his Tallet.
  • New York
  • The Hazzan recites the blessings for the Government, the Kahal (with the inclusion of the Yamim Nora-im formula) and the State of Israel.
  • Hashcabot for names of Tishri 10, Eleven Months list, second third of perpetual Hashcabot
  • The Parnas comes to the Tebah while the choir sings the Mi Sheberakh with the additions as on Rosh Hashanah.
  • The Hazzan bows to the Parnas and announces the Mitsvot as follows:

Sefer Torah Shel Yom Hakippurim

  • Two Sifre Torah:
    • a – Ahare Mot. (6 ‘Aliyot) or (7 for Shabbat D,F,I,M)
    • b – Maftir
  • Recite the Kaddish after each Sefer Torah.
  • At end of Mashlim and before the Mi Sheberakh, recite Kaddish.
  • While 2nd Sefer Torah is placed on reader’s desk and while the 1st one is removed, we sing “Elokim Tseba-ot”.
  • Recite the Kaddish after 2nd Sefer Torah and “En Ka-el Yeshurun” while the 2nd Sefer Torah is removed.
  • Philadelphia: After Haftarah, if it is Shabbat, we recite Hashcabot, then the prayers for the Government, State of Israel, and Congregation.
  • Yehi Hasdekha by the next Hazzan.
  • Yimlokh and Mizmor Ledavid are in the High Holiday melodies.
  • Sifre Torah are returned as usual.
  • Offerings are as on Rosh Hashanah.
  • The doors of the Hekhal remain open for Mussaf.

Mussaf Shel Yom HaKippurim

  • The Seganim ascend the Tebah at the end of the Kaddish Le’ela and before the ‘Amidah the Hazzan puts his Tallet over the head.
  • Mussaf is read first Belahash.
  • The Hazarah is introduced by “Atanu”. In New York we say only the first stanza and also skip the words “Yeshu’a Ve”.
  • The Keter is sung to the tune of “Amonai Bekol Shofar”.
  • The Kahal sings ” ‘Alenu Leshabeyah” and Hazzan repeats “Hakkadosh Barukh Hu”.
  • The Cohanim will say the Dukhan. If there are no Cohanim, then the Hazzan will say the Bircat Cohanim to the tune of Hashkibenu.
  • En Kelohenu to the tune of Yede Rashim.
  • ‘Alenu to the tune of Rosh Hashanah.
  • At the end of ‘Alenu the Hazzan lowers his Tallet, the Seganim descend from the Tebah and the doors of the Hekhal are closed for sermon.
  • Sermon
  • The doors of the Hekhal are reopened after sermon.
  • Adon ‘Olam to the Yede Rashim tune.
  • The doors of the hekhal are closed at the end.
  • Philadelphia: The perpetual Hashcabot are recited.

Minhah Shel Yom HaKippurim

  • Minhah is started immediately without bowing to the Parnas.
  • In Ashre “Tehillat” is sung by choir and Kahal to the Shabbat tune.
  • “Uba Letsion Go-el” is started by the Hazzan and the choir and Kahal take over.
  • New York: After the Kaddish, signal the choir to start the “El Erekh Appayim”. At this time the Parnas will come to the Tebah.
  • Announce the Mitsvot as follows:

  • After the Haftarah, the Hazzan starts “Yehallelu” (New York: in a special melody) and the choir takes over. The Sefer Torah is brought back to the Hekhal and offerings, if any, are made. The Hazzan then returns to the Tebah without saying Shuba. Instead we say Ki Lekakh tob…
  • The Hekhal doors are left open and the Seganim ascend the Tebah and the Hazzan puts the Tallet over his head at the end of the Kaddish.
  • The ‘Amidah is first said Belahash.
  • Kedushah to the tune of “Anna Ke’ab Zedoni”.
  • No bircat Cohanim is read in Minhah.
  • continue services as indicated.
  • ‘Alenu to the Rosh Hashanah tune.
  • The Seganim descend, the Hekhal is closed and the Hazzan lowers his Tallet at the end of ‘Alenu.

Ne’ilah Shel Yom HaKippurim

  • New York: Preceding the Ne’ilah, the Hashcabot are recited for the Hazzanim and the remaining part of the perpetual list.
  • The Parnas comes to the Tebah and the Mitsvot are announced as follows:
  1. “Mi She… Sheyiftah Et Sha’are Hahekhal Litfilat Hane’ila (Minister)
  2. ” … Sheya’amod Letsad Yemin Shel Sh”Ts Litfilat Hane’ila (Parnas-Presidente)
  3. ” … Sheya’amod Letsad Semol Shel Sh”Ts Litfilat Hane’ila (Segan-Vice Presidente)
  • The Parnas goes back to his seat and the Hazzan goes down to the pulpit for a “short” “prayer”. After which, he opens the doors of the Hekhal, cover his head with the Tallet and starts the words “El Nora ‘Alilah”. The choir and Kahal then take over. He then walks slowly back to the Tebah, sits and repeats the various verses of the “El Nora ‘Alilah”.
  • In Ashre “Tehillat” is sung as on Shabbat but WITHOUT CHOIR.
  • At the end of Ashre, he stands up, bows to the Parnas and Segan to join him to the Tebah as Seganim.
  • After the Kaddish, the Hazzan puts his Tallet over the head and start the silent ‘Amidah of the Neilah. (Note: Hotmenu instead of Kotbenu).
  • The Hazarah is introduced by “Atanu”. In New York we say only the first two stanzas and also skip the words “Yeshu’a Ve” and “Selihah Ve”.
  • In the Hazarah, the Keter is sung to the tune of the Ne’ilah.
  • On Page 327 “Amonai Hu Ha-Elokim” is said 7 times each time in a higher key.
  • The Tokeya’ comes up and covers his head with the Tallet and blows the Shofar (TaSHRaT).
  • Service continues as indicated and “Kol Kelee” is read 3 times.
  • The Congregants are encouraged not to leave the Synagogue before the end.

‘Arbit Motsa-e Yom HaKippurim

  • Immediately, the next Hazzan starts ‘Arbit with “Vehu Rahum” fast, and LOUD.
  • Before the ‘Amidah announce: “Omerim Atah Honantanu”.
  • After Yehi Shem, Kaddish Le’ela, Orekh Yamim, Ve-atah Kaddosh, Kaddish Titkabbal, Shir Lama’alot, Kaddish for Abel and ‘Alenu.
  • Habdalah over Yayin and Or only even if it is Motsa-e Shabbat; starting from “Sabri Maranan”.
